Working on the deck and the port and starboard gunwales

Sanding, filling and fairing the deck for installing the new port and starboard wooden gunwales. The original Gunwales were moth-eaten and rotten because the humidity due to being out in the open for many years. It was necessary to reinforce the edges or places where the gunwales would be placed. Gunwales are very important because:
  • Stiffen and protect the edges of the hull
  • The outer part of the gunwale protects the outer edge of the hull from damage
  • Deflects water  from entering the boat  when waves splash the sides
  • Also, serves as a convenient hand hold for people who fall into the water.
  • It serves as a stop for the feet when you walk on the deck of the boat. It can help you not to slip and fall out of the boat.
